Pittsburgh and West Virginia
Name:

Pittsburgh and West Virginia

Description:
A small line that played a part in some big dreams. George Gould intended to piece it and a number of other small lines together to form a true transcontinental railroad (interestingly, the US still does not have a true transcontinental line). That idea ended in 1907, and the P and WV became part of the 'alphabet route', which attempted to compete with the New York Central and PRR in carrying passengers and freight from the Mid Atlantic to Chicago and points west. It was eventually leased, bought, and buried by the Norfolk an Western.
