See those oil derricks on the logo? Signal Oil is named after Signal Hill in Los Angeles. Signal Hill was an astonishing combination of real estate, oil, and profits. Signal Hill had been divided into lots intended for single family homes. Then Shell struck oil. Soon there was an oil derrick on nearly every lot on the hill, over a hundred total.
